THE national day of action against drivers using their hand-held mobile phones on the move led to five being caught in the Northern Constabulary area.
Thursday also targeted people not using seatbelts, and this led to 15 drivers and one front-seat passenger facing police action in the north.
Road policing officer Inspector John Smith said: “Despite poor weather and road conditions, a number of motorists put themselves further at risk by using mobile phones and refusing to wear seatbelts. Speeding and the failure to wear a seatbelt are major contributory factors in many serious and fatal road traffic collisions.
“The actions of those detected, while resulting in fines and on occasion penalty points, not only impacts on the drivers and passengers, but also highlights the danger posed to other road users.”
He added: “The use of handheld mobile phones while driving continues across the force area, and there will be no let-up in our efforts to detect and penalise those who persist in this dangerous and illegal practice.”While this was a one day event, police say their efforts to help improve safety on the roads of the Highlands and islands will continue.
