New figures have revealed that the mobile social networking space is continuing to expand at a rapid rate.
According to comScore, almost 31 per cent of US smartphone users accessed mobile social media sites in January, representing an 8.3 per cent increase compared with the same month last year.
Twitter saw a 347 per cent surge in mobile traffic, while Facebook experienced a rise of 112 per cent over the same period.
Mark Donovan, senior vice-president of mobile for comScore, called social media a "natural sweet spot" for the mobile web sector.
"Mobile devices are at the centre of how people communicate with their circle of friends, whether by phone, text, email or, increasingly, accessing social networking sites via a mobile browser," he explained.
Over 100 million people worldwide currently access Facebook with a mobile phone, according to the social networking website's own figures.
It says that people who use the mobile version of Facebook tend to be twice as active on the site than those who do not.
